One PSU to rule them all!

We appreciate that it's very challenging to deploy new products in new markets. Safety approval costs can be significant and the business case is difficult to establish when the market adoption is uncertain. 

We have recently supported a customer on this discussion, showing that this can be addressed with the USB-PD standard.

This standard allows the psu to change its output in accordance with the load requirements through the use of 20V, 15V, 9V and 5V profiles that can be further enhanced with the 'Programmable Power Supply (PPS) feature and the use of custom profiles for bespoke brand authentication. 

Whilst the architecture is more complex than a fixed output psu, this single psu can be used to support a range of low volume new product introductions where there may be a limited business case for significant new NRE fees incurred with a custom product. This may also result In further savings In supply chain and logistics management until the business ramps to the point that justifies an optimised fixed output psu solution.
